Recently, the police in Qingpu, Shanghai, destroyed a gang smuggling and selling botulinum toxin and other medical and aesthetic drugs, and arrested 21 suspect, involving more than 100 million yuan.
In March of this year, the Qingpu police learned of clues that someone had smuggled botulinum toxin and other medical beauty drugs from overseas. They immediately mobilized elite police forces and established a special investigation team led by the Economic Investigation Detachment to carry out the investigation.
According to the investigating authorities, these suspected smuggled goods are all sent from overseas to Shanghai and then transported to other provinces and cities. The suspect is very vigilant, using false addresses for shipping and receiving. After conducting in-depth investigations into the delivery location, company structure, and other factors, the police gradually clarified the operation mode and personnel situation of the gang.
In late April this year, under the guidance of the Economic Investigation Team of the Municipal Bureau, the special case team carried out arrest operations, captured 7 suspect of the smuggling gang led by Lian in many places of the country, 6 persons including Ren, the head of the agent warehouse, seized more than 9000 boxes of medical and aesthetic drugs such as botulinum toxin smuggled on the spot, and destroyed 4 agent warehouses. Subsequently, the police continued to dig deeper and arrested 8 suspects, including Jin, who had purchased botulinum toxin for sale. At this point, a criminal chain that involved smuggling, transporting, storing, and selling drugs such as botulinum toxin has been successfully dismantled.

According to Lian, the suspect, in October 2022, a company operating beauty products overseas contacted him and said that he would ship some products to China through his company, and then send them to several fixed warehouses for storage and sales. Although knowing that the items being checked in were prohibited products, Lian still reached a cooperation agreement with the other party. After the goods enter the country, Lian will send them to various agent warehouses according to the requirements of the overseas company. Yang, Liu, and others assisted in the storage of medical beauty drugs such as botulinum toxin, knowing that the source of botulinum toxin was unknown and there was no marketing permit in China, and there were no cold chain measures throughout the entire process. Afterwards, this batch of goods was separately sent to Ren and others for sale and use in medical beauty activities.
At present, seven suspect, including Lian, are suspected of smuggling goods and articles prohibited by the state from import and export, and 14 suspect, including Ren, Yang and Liu, are suspected of obstructing drug management, all of which have been taken criminal coercive measures by Qingpu police according to law. The case is under further investigation.
