On the morning of June 25th, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission announced that Xu Wenrong, former Deputy Secretary of the Party Group and Deputy General Manager of China National Petroleum Corporation Limited, is suspected of serious violations of discipline and law and is under disciplinary review and supervision investigation by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission.
Xu Wenrong was born in June 1961. After graduating from China University of Petroleum in 1982, he has been working in the petroleum system for a long time. He is a professor level senior engineer and has served as the Deputy Director and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of China Petroleum Geophysical Exploration Bureau, as well as the General Manager and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Dongfang Geophysical Exploration Co., Ltd.
In 2004, Xu Wenrong was appointed as the Assistant General Manager of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), and for the following seven years, he also served as the Director of the Development Research Department of CNPC and the Chairman of CNPC International Engineering Company. In 2011, Xu Wenrong transferred to China Shipping Corporation as a member of the Party Group and leader of the Discipline Inspection Group. During this time, he also held positions such as Deputy General Manager of the Corporation, Chairman of the Trade Union, President of the Party School, and Dean of the Management Cadres College.
In January 2016, Xu Wenrong returned to PetroChina as the Deputy General Manager and member of the Party Group. He was promoted to Deputy Secretary of the Party Group at the end of that year and stepped down in October 2020. After stepping down, Xu Wenrong was appointed by the State owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council and successively became an external director of China First Automobile Group Co., Ltd. and China National Building Materials Group Co., Ltd.

At the same time, Xu Wenrong was also the third central management cadre among the inspected units to fall from grace after the launch of the first round of inspections by the 20th Central Committee. In this round of inspections, the central inspection team conducted a "look back" inspection of the party committees of five state-owned financial enterprises, including China Everbright Group Co., Ltd., and a mobile inspection of the party groups of the General Administration of Sport of China. Du Zhaocai, a member of the party group and deputy director of the General Administration of Sport of China, was inspected on April 1, and Li Xiaopeng, former party secretary and chairman of China Everbright Group Co., Ltd., was inspected on April 5.
