Why did Gates come?, Visiting China after nearly four years | Gates
Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft and co chairman of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, announced on social media on the evening of June 14th that he has arrived in Beijing, marking his first visit to China in nearly four years. He stated that this trip aims to promote the resolution of issues such as climate change, and China plays an important role in this process.
After nearly four years
"I just landed in Beijing, this is my first visit since 2019," Gates said on Weibo last night. "I am very happy to meet my Chinese partners.".
Gates stated that this trip aims to promote innovative solutions to issues such as climate change, health inequalities, and food security.
He said: "The world has made great progress in reducing child mortality and poverty, but the global crisis has hindered these progress. African countries are particularly vulnerable in the face of high food prices, heavy debt and the increasing incidence rate of tuberculosis and malaria. That is why I am going to visit West Africa next."
In Gates' view, China plays an important role in helping more people around the world achieve development. "The Gates Foundation has been working with Chinese partners to address global health and development challenges for over 15 years," he said. China has extensive experience in these areas, from developing new anti malaria drugs to investing in solutions to adapt to climate change.
Gates' last visit to China was in November 2019, when he participated in the commemoration of the tenth anniversary of tuberculosis prevention and control cooperation between the National Health Commission of China and the Gates Foundation, and discussed the project progress and future development direction with relevant officials.
Chinese leaders or meetings
Reuters quoted people familiar with the matter as saying on the 14th that during his visit to China, Gates may have a one-on-one meeting with President Xi Jinping on the 16th. According to reports, this will be the first time in the past three years that President Xi has met with foreign representatives with entrepreneurial backgrounds.
According to public reports, this will be the first meeting between President Xi and Gates in eight years. In March 2015, President Xi met with Gates at the Boao State Guesthouse in Hainan Province. The two sides exchanged views on strengthening public health, improving people's health and reducing poverty.
It is reported that Gates has been concerned and supportive of China and the development of Sino US relations for many years, and has played a constructive role in promoting cooperation between the two countries.
After the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, the Gates Foundation announced to provide an emergency grant of US $5 million to support China in combating the epidemic. Afterwards, it also promised to invest up to $100 million in grants, with a portion used to directly assist China in accelerating research and development in areas such as drugs, vaccines, and diagnostic methods.
In February 2020, President Xi wrote back to Gates: "At a critical time in China's fight against the new coronary pneumonia epidemic, the foundation led by you and your wife has generously contributed, and you have written to me to express your support for the Chinese people, for which I would like to express my heartfelt thanks."
Last month, Gates participated in the 2023 Zhongguancun Forum via video and stated that crisis knows no borders, and humanity must be committed to cross-border cooperation. "China has remarkable experience and expertise, and has long been committed to investing in technological innovation. In addressing some complex global challenges, China will be able to make unique contributions to the world by sharing its technological achievements and successful experiences."
It is not clear what the topic of potential talks between President Xi and Gates is, but according to Gates himself, the talks may involve global health and development, including challenges.
Moreover, since Gates left Microsoft's board of directors in 2020, he has focused on charitable causes related to global health, education, and climate change. The foundation jointly established by him and his ex-wife Melinda has established long-term cooperation with China in various fields such as disease prevention and control, poverty alleviation, and other areas.
Under multiple backgrounds
The public has noticed that Gates' trip also took place against the backdrop of a wave of foreign executives visiting China this year. However, most of the Chinese representatives who had previously met with visiting executives were government officials. For example, American entrepreneur Musk met with Foreign Minister Qin Gang and Commerce Minister Wang Wentao during his visit to China last month.
In March of this year, Premier Li Qiang met with overseas representatives attending the 2023 Annual Meeting of the China Development Forum in Beijing and had discussions with them, including Apple CEO Cook and others.
At the same time, data released by the Ministry of Commerce shows that from January to April this year, the actual amount of foreign investment used in China was 499.46 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 2.2%. The number of newly established foreign-invested enterprises and the actual amount of foreign investment used have shown a stable and positive trend, which strongly proves that opening up China remains a highland for foreign investment.
The public also noted that Gates' trip took place at a time of world turmoil and severe challenges facing China US relations. Coincidentally, on the occasion of Gates' visit to China, Qin Gang had a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Brinken at request on the 14th. The two sides agreed that Antony Blinken would visit China from June 18 to 19.
However, according to a report by Consumer News and Business Channel on the 14th, the White House has hinted that Gates' trip is not related to the White House. White House press secretary Karina Jean Pierre stated that she is not aware of the specific circumstances of Gates' visit.
