There are these plans in Indo Pacific... German Defense Minister: Indo Pacific | German Defense Minister for the next two years
German Defense Minister Pistorius stated at the Shangri La Dialogue held in Singapore on the 4th that Germany will carry out multiple operations in the Indian Ocean Pacific region this year and next, including dispatching two warships to maintain a "rule based international order". If implemented, this would be the German warship's second foray into the Indo Pacific waters after two years. However, while showcasing its muscles in the Indo Pacific region, Germany also needs to carefully balance its economic interests in the region.
German warships will travel to Indo Pacific again
In nearly half a year since taking office, Pistorius began his first trip to the Indo Pacific on the 2nd. During the 6-day itinerary, he has attended the "incense ceremony" in Singapore and will visit Indonesia and India. The German Ministry of Defense stated that this trip is committed to fulfilling Germany's long-term commitments in the Indo Pacific region and strengthening partnerships.
"When we examine security and prosperity in the 21st century, the Indo Pacific region is one of the key areas," Pistorius said after arriving in Singapore. "We cannot ignore this region."
According to a statement released by the German Ministry of Defense, Pistorius stated during his attendance at the Incense Conference that Germany will carry out multiple operations in the Indo Pacific region this year and next. This year, the German Air Force and Navy plan to participate in the "Escort Saber" military exercise led by the United States and Australia.
Next year, the flag of the German Navy will once again fly in the Indo Pacific region. After dispatching the "Bavaria" frigate to the Indo Pacific region in 2021, the German government plans to send another frigate to the region next year, including a support ship. These two warships will participate in maritime supervision of the United Nations sanctions against North Korea and participate in the US led "Pacific Rim" military exercise. Next year, the German Air Force also plans to participate in the "pitch black" military exercise led by Australia again.
Pistorius said that these actions are not aimed at any country, but are "committed to maintaining a rule-based international order... whether in the Mediterranean, Bay of Bengal, or South China Sea."
According to German media reports, Pistorius also stated during his attendance at the "incense ceremony" that Germany is prepared to strengthen its contacts with partners in the Indo Pacific region in the coming years.
According to a report by the US Naval Research Association last month, German Rear Admiral Jan Christian Keck also revealed the German Navy's operational plans in the Indo Pacific region for the next two years at the International Maritime Safety Conference.
Keck revealed that the warship to be dispatched to the Indo Pacific region next year will be one of Germany's latest frigates - one of the four Baden-W ü rttemberg class frigates. These four frigates, each with a displacement of 7200 tons, were put into service between 2019 and 2022.
The military presence is constantly deepening
If implemented, this would be the German warship's second foray into the Indo Pacific waters after two years. In August 2021, the German Navy frigate "Bavaria" embarked on a 7-month Indo Pacific tour and held joint exercises with countries such as Japan and Australia. This is the first time a German warship has entered the region in nearly 20 years.
At that time, German Navy Commander Sch ö nberg stated that the arrival of the Bavaria was just a "warning" and expected to send another frigate and a support ship in two years.
At the same time, European warships such as Britain and France can also be seen in the Indo Pacific region. Public opinion has noticed that in recent years, with the launch of the "Indo Pacific Strategy" by the US government, European countries such as Germany are also turning their attention to this hot spot.
In September 2020, the German government issued guidelines for Indo Pacific policy, sending a clear signal that the region is increasingly becoming a focus of Germany's foreign and security policies. Afterwards, European countries such as Germany frequently deployed military forces from afar in the Indo Pacific region.
In addition to the Bavaria, the German Air Force also launched its first Indo Pacific tour in August last year, conducting joint exercises with Australia and Japan. This operation, codenamed "Fast Pacific," is intended to showcase the German Air Force's rapid operational capabilities, claiming to be a "24-hour flight to Asia.".
The German government stated that there are two main considerations when looking at the Indo Pacific region. On the one hand, the three major economies in the world are all located along the Pacific coast, and the Indo Pacific region is the region with the most economic growth potential in the world, playing a crucial role in shaping the international order.
On the other hand, the Indo Pacific region encompasses crucial global trade routes. If regional tensions erupt, it may endanger the interests of trading power Germany. It is reported that about 20% of Germany's foreign trade takes place in the region, and about 40% of Europe's foreign trade passes through the South China Sea.
In February of this year, shortly after taking office, Pistorius also mentioned the Indo Pacific situation during his attendance at the Munich Security Conference. He said that focusing on national and collective defense does not mean the end of overseas operations.
"Taking responsibility in the world is a part of the bigger picture," he said. "We must show our position, we must show that we are not indifferent to this region."
It is worth noting that if the German Navy's naval dispatch plan is implemented, it will reflect the trend of gradually expanding the dispatch scale and forming a normalized mechanism. As more and more countries outside the region deepen their military presence in the Indo Pacific region, it is feared that it will exacerbate regional tensions.
In addition, public opinion believes that while showing off its muscles in the Indo Pacific region, Germany also needs to carefully balance its economic interests in the region. According to a report released by the German Federal Agency for Foreign Trade and Investment, as of the end of 2022, China has become Germany's world's largest trading partner for seven consecutive years. For many years, Germany has also been China's largest trading partner in the European Union.
