This summer, the doctoral medical service team of Fudan University Shanghai Medical College, known as the "white angels walking deep in the mountains," set off as usual to travel to remote areas of our country and take on the mission of being a doctor in volunteer service. It is reported that since its establishment in 1994, the "Bo Yi Tuan" has been committed to leveraging the professional knowledge of medical doctoral students and providing medical assistance with exquisite skills every year, so that people can enjoy high-quality and efficient medical and health services at their doorstep. Data shows that over the past 29 years, the "Bo Yi Tuan" has served more than 10000 days and nights, with over a thousand people participating in the work of the Bo Yi Tuan. It has carried out large-scale free medical services for 50000 people, covering over 100000 kilometers. The service coverage has expanded to 38 hospitals in 26 counties and 16 provinces, cities, and autonomous regions across the country.
The first stop of the "Bo Yi Tuan" is to carry out medical and health volunteer services in Gong'an County, Hubei Province. Within the People's Hospital of Gong'an County, experts went to various departments to provide guidance on ward rounds. Doctoral volunteers go deep into outpatient clinics and wards to communicate and exchange ideas with doctors and patients in county hospitals. Dr. Deng Jiajia from the School of Stomatology provides free dental consultations for local children, exchanges diagnosis and treatment experiences with local doctors, and shares cases of arch wire bending and correction on site; Dr. Zhai Ruyi, an ophthalmologist at the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, participated in consultations with several complex ophthalmic patients and provided professional recommendations for treatment and follow-up. "Teaching people to fish, but more importantly, teaching people to fish." The 10 members also stepped onto the podium and conducted 12 departmental lectures based on their respective professional expertise, sharing the latest diagnosis, treatment, and scientific research progress with local medical workers.
After completing the medical volunteer service at Gong'an County People's Hospital, the members rushed to Nanping Town Gong'an County Second People's Hospital and Buhe Town Health Center to carry out free consultations. Nanping Town and Buhe Town are located at the north and south ends of Gong'an County, both of which are large local towns with a high demand for medical treatment. Many members do a good job of science popularization and education for patients during free clinics. Dr. Ye Yangli from the Endocrinology Department of Zhongshan Hospital found that many chronic disease patients lack health knowledge and weak self-management awareness. In response to these situations, she conducted health examinations and educated villagers on the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases.
The second stop of the "Bo Yi Tuan" is to provide medical volunteer practice services in Yushu, Qinghai. At the free clinic, volunteers patiently and meticulously analyzed the patient's condition for the residents seeking treatment, carefully answered the prevention, treatment, and difficult questions of basic diseases, common diseases, and frequent diseases, and proposed targeted treatment suggestions. Chen Feiyan, Deputy Chief Physician of the Orthopedics Department at Huashan Hospital, said, "Local residents have insufficient health awareness, and many cases of fracture displacement, non reduction, and malunion occur. Some patients with osteofascial compartment syndrome seek medical treatment after ischemic necrosis, and can only have their limbs amputated." Local residents have expressed that "they can enjoy Shanghai expert free consultation services right at their doorstep, which is very lucky!" The members also sent health services to their doorstep through "sending doctors to their homes.". Cui Xiaotong, the deputy chief physician of the Department of Cardiology of Zhongshan Hospital, found that chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes were not well controlled in the local area after several residents entered their homes for diagnosis. "We are able to provide consultation on treatment plans for the residents and hope that their condition can be controlled and improved." The medical staff of Zhaxike Street Health Service Center specially presented a banner for the "Doctor Doctor Group" - "great love for the world and benevolence of the doctors" to express gratitude and praise.
Afterwards, the "Bo Medical Team" carried out medical volunteer services at Xiji County People's Hospital in Ningxia. Ding Weiqun, the chief physician of the Department of Gastroenterology at Huashan Hospital, found that most patients are unwilling to undergo gastroscopy examination due to concerns about the sequelae of gastroscopy. After in-depth communication with local doctors, Ding Weiqun put forward suggestions in order to change the awareness of the local people. Dr. Liu Rongle, the attending physician of the Department of Cardiology at Zhongshan Hospital, saw a patient who had previously been treated with acute myocardial infarction during interventional therapy. The patient came specifically for consultation, and Liu Rongle patiently listened and helped him adjust his medication. Experts and doctoral volunteers from the "Bo Yi Tuan" visited 14 local households with special difficulties such as living alone, staying behind, and being disabled, providing high-quality medical resources for the public at home.
When Dr. Wan Weiguo, the chief physician of the Rheumatology Department at Huashan Hospital, entered the house, he encountered a patient with poor blood pressure control. After reviewing the patient's medical records, he found that the patient's medication was irregular due to excessive use of drugs. Wan Weiguo helped the patient classify the medication, carefully marked the medication method on the medication box, and wrote the follow-up medication adjustment plan on paper for the patient. Su Ya, the attending physician of the Department of Neurology at Huashan Hospital, visited the home of a patient who had undergone brain metastasis resection for a lung tumor. After conducting a detailed physical examination, she found that the patient's left thigh muscle strength was decreasing. Su Ya customized rehabilitation training for the patient to ensure that he improved the strength of his left thigh through simple and easy to operate exercises, thereby not affecting daily life. After providing medical volunteer practice services in Xiji County, Ningxia, the "Bo Medical Team" continued its work on July 27th in Guyuan City, Ningxia. They provided free consultations, medical lectures, teaching rounds, departmental exchanges, and health consultations for the people at the Second People's Hospital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
