Indian couple sells their child to buy an iPhone
According to a report by the US business insider website on July 28th, according to the India Express, police in West Bengal, India, said that a couple sold their 8-month-old child to buy an Apple phone. The local police quoted the mother of the child as saying that the couple wants to use the money from selling their son to travel and post content on social media Instagram.
According to reports, the police said that the couple had just bought a brand new Apple phone, which aroused suspicion among local residents, so people called the police. The World Bank says that there is a portion of the deeply impoverished population in West Bengal. This may be the reason for the suspicion of other residents. According to a 2022 report by the Indian PRS legislative research organization, the per capita gross domestic product in the region is about $1600, slightly higher than the price of a brand new iPhone 14 in India at that time. The police said that the couple sold their child to someone who also lived in the area. At present, both the buyer and the mother of the baby have been arrested. Father is still at large.
According to the Indian Express, the police also accused the father of the baby of attempting to sell the other 7-year-old child of the couple, but the plan was not realized.
