After being broadcasted on multiple TV channels such as CCTV One, CCTV Eight, Oriental TV, and Guangdong TV, the Shanghai produced TV drama "The Road to Life" has ushered in a new round of rebroadcasts.
On the evening of July 19th, "The Road of Life" will be broadcasted on the Oriental Film and Television Channel. The drama will be directed by Yan Jiangang, starring Chen Xiao and Li Qin, Zhang Jiani, Wang Tianchen, and Tang Zeng, with Lin Yongjian specially starring, and Liu Wei and Li Guangfu playing friendly roles. The series is based on the famous work "Life" by writer Lu Yao, and revolves around the ups and downs of the fate of young people in northern Shaanxi, such as Gao Jialin, Liu Qiaozhen, Huang Yaping, and Gao Shuangxing. It tells the story of a generation of young people who have reached a crossroads in life and demonstrated their tenacious perseverance in making choices that do not yield to fate.
In order to preserve the authentic soul of the loess land in Lu Yao's novel "Life", "The Road to Life" adopts a live shooting method. The main creative team of hundreds of people spent nearly a year preparing the scenery in Qingjian County, Shaanxi Province, their hometown of Luyao. The noodle shop opened by Liu Qiaozhen's family in the drama uses Qingjian's specialty starch noodles, which are the main food of every household in Qingjian County and quite distinctive of northern Shaanxi.
The Kuanzhou County in the 1980s was also built with great effort by the creative team from scratch. Art director Liu Yongqi, who holds important awards such as the Golden Eagle Award, has realistically recreated the scenery of northern Shaanxi. Every household in Qingjian County, Madian Primary School, and Gaojiagou, from small tea cups and agricultural tools to large wind and rain marks, and different numbers of cave dwellings in each courtyard, have all reproduced the scenery from decades ago. Chen Minzheng, who participated in the design of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, recreated the character designs of the 1980s for the actors. Wei Wei, the chief producer of "The Road of Life", said, "In the drama, the cave dwellings in Gaojia Village, from doors and windows to furnishings, are almost all old items that are found in local farmers' homes. After being wrapped in paste from the ages, the image quality is excellent. During filming, young actors such as Chen Xiao and Li Qin have no idol burden, only to achieve the best performance effect."
In terms of plot, this drama provides a reasonable continuation of Lu Yao's unfinished words in "Life", and places the protagonists' foothold in Shanghai when they leave northern Shaanxi. In the original work, Gao Jialin's position as a private teacher was replaced and changed to "replacement of college entrance examination scores" in "The Road to Life". Gao Shuangxing entered university under Gao Jialin's name and stole his life that originally belonged to him. But through the struggles of each character, Gao Jialin, Liu Qiaozhen, Gao Shuangxing, and others reunited on the stage of Greater Shanghai, thus interpreting a new fate for the characters.
The character portrayal in "The Road of Life" is realistic and vivid. Chen Xiao has refreshed the audience's understanding of him in this drama: he has a scholarly temperament, but always looks dejected and heavy, with lingering melancholy between his eyebrows. Li Qin also changed his previous fresh and charming screen image, portraying a simple, kind, and bright girl named Liu Qiaozhen. Zhang Jiani interprets Huang Yaping's elegance and self as a flower of ideals on barren soil and a passionate romanticist. The wonderful performances contributed by Lin Yongjian, Liu Wei, Li Guangfu, etc., made the clever secretary Gao Minglou, the clumsy and honest father Liu Liben, and the detached and open-minded old man Deshun Lord appear in front of the audience.
