After 12 years of hard work, the second round of compiling new local chronicles in Shanghai has been fully completed. This is a significant achievement in the cultural construction of Shanghai in the new era, and an important symbol of showcasing the brand identity of "Shanghai culture". On the afternoon of July 26th, a meeting of all members of the Shanghai Local Chronicles Compilation Committee was held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center to summarize the second round of new compilation of local chronicles in the city. The meeting commended 41 "excellent organizational units", 103 "excellent compilation collectives", and 180 "excellent compilation workers" for the second round of compilation, and deployed and promoted the main work of local chronicles in the next stage.
The second round of newly compiled local chronicles in Shanghai comprehensively records the history and current situation of Shanghai's politics, economy, culture, society, and nature, with a focus on the important experiences and achievements of Shanghai's reform and opening up from 1978 to 2010, showcasing the historical and local characteristics of the development and transformation of Shanghai's mega city. The results of the second round of chronicle revision include 140 Shanghai city chronicles, 147 volumes, 54 city level specialized chronicles, 55 volumes, and 24 district and county chronicles, totaling 218 volumes and 233 volumes in three series, totaling 321 million words.
The second round of chronicle revision work is tight in time and heavy in tasks, with tens of thousands of full-time and part-time chroniclers working silently in the city. Representatives from the Municipal Housing and Urban Rural Development Management Committee, Renji Hospital, and Pudong New Area gave exchange speeches at the meeting.
From 1978 to 2010, Shanghai achieved outstanding results in urban and rural construction. The prominent problems that plague citizens, such as housing difficulties, traffic congestion, and environmental pollution, have been effectively solved. The per capita living area in the urban area has increased by about 3 times, the per capita road area has increased by nearly 11 times, the per capita public green space area has increased by nearly 27 times, the daily sewage treatment capacity has increased by nearly 50 times, and the annual treatment capacity of household waste has increased by nearly 6 times. The annual passenger throughput of the airport has increased by nearly 170 times; Port cargo throughput has increased by nearly 8 times; Modern infrastructure such as urban expressways, highways, rail transit, and network communication have emerged from scratch. The rapid growth of various infrastructure and social facilities has played a historic role in reshaping Shanghai's urban functions, promoting economic transformation and development, improving people's quality of life, and establishing Shanghai's status as a socialist international metropolis. The Municipal Housing and Urban Rural Development Management Committee has undertaken the compilation tasks of the "Overview Volume", "Real Estate Industry Volume", and "Urban Rural Road Volume" of the "Construction Industry Sub Chronicles" and "Urban Rural Construction Sub Chronicles". The total text of the four volumes is about 5 million, with more than 600 charts. Among them, the "Construction Industry Chronicles" is the first to achieve full coverage of multiple construction industries, including survey, design, construction, engineering consulting, and building materials supply.
The compilation personnel closely grasp the correct direction of compilation, the historical orientation of Shanghai's urban development, the historical mainline of reform and opening up, and the characteristics of people's urban construction. They focus on key areas of people's livelihood such as housing, transportation, public facility construction, and ecological environment quality improvement, and use rich facts and data to reflect the real sense of gain, satisfaction, and happiness brought by reform and development to citizens.
Renji Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, born in 1844, is the first Western medicine hospital in Shanghai. The Renji Hospital Chronicle, a specialized chronicle at the municipal level in Shanghai, has over 1.33 million words and is the longest span of time recorded in the second round of local chronicle compilation in Shanghai. As the editorial department of the Renji Hospital Chronicle, Renji Hospital established the Hospital Chronicle Office, and more than 160 editorial personnel were selected from various departments to participate in the writing and proofreading of various chapters of the hospital Chronicle.
Renji Hospital has a long history and it is difficult to search for historical materials. During the compilation process, a large number of precious historical materials were excavated, including numerous physical objects and architectural relics. In 2015, Renji Hospital established a mobile hospital history museum with the inpatient building of "Shanghai Excellent Historical Architecture" completed in 1932 as the main body. In December 2019, the hospital history hall of Renji Hospital was officially opened. In November 2021, the "Cloud Exhibition Hall" of the hospital history hall was launched and connected to the WeChat official account of Renji Hospital, effectively expanding the communication channel of the local chronicle culture and the hospital's spirit of "benevolence and salvation".
In the second round of compiling chronicles, Pudong New Area has successively completed the compilation of five chronicles, including "Chuansha County Continuation Chronicle", "Nanhui County Continuation Chronicle", "Pudong New Area Chronicle", "Nanhui District Chronicle", and "Shanghai City Chronicle · Pudong Development and Opening up Branch Chronicle", with a word count of 11.1 million. For example, the "Pudong New Area Chronicle" adopts a model where various committees, bureaus, enterprises and institutions undertake the compilation, and the district chronicle office accepts the overall compilation. More than 300 units in the entire district participate in the compilation; The Shanghai Chronicle · Pudong Development and Opening up Sub Chronicle adopts a project-based approach, which is led by an expert who is familiar with the local conditions of Pudong and has over 30 years of experience in compiling chronicles. A small team follows up and is responsible for the entire process of editing; In response to the situation of long withdrawal time and serious data loss, the compilation of the Nanhui District Chronicle adopts a group driven approach and centralized editing.
The successful completion of the second round of local chronicle revision in this city marks a new stage of development for Shanghai's local chronicle work in the new era.
