The oldest popular science journal in Chinese history brings surprises, "restoring" the cold beverage workshop technology of Yimin Food Factory | Science Pictorial | History

A blue cover German Russian Dictionary, the pages have turned yellow. The exhibit displayed in today's opening "Beauty of Technology - Illustrated Technology 90 Year Theme Exhibition in Science Pictorial" records the fate of a technology worker and a technology journal.

"In the early 1960s, in order to expand my knowledge and understand the frontier of international science and technology, I read a large number of popular science books, the most important of which is Science Pictorial. The reader has been a long time, and also wants to try to be an author. I translated the" Blue Sunshine Battery "on the Russian popular science magazine into Chinese and sent it to the editorial department of Science Pictorial, and soon received an employment notice. It was 1962, when I was a student, I bought a German Russian Dictionary in the bookstore with the 2 yuan contribution fee for this meaningful" debut "plus the 1 yuan birthday gift sent to me by my mother, and began to learn the third foreign language." The exhibition opened. Yang Xiongli, an 82 year old academician of the CAS Member, recalled the past, "As a long-term reader and author of Science Pictorial, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to it and hope to have the opportunity to celebrate its 100th anniversary."

In August 1933, Science Illustrated was founded by the Chinese Science Society in Shanghai. It is the oldest comprehensive science popularization journal in China, which embodies the struggles and dreams of several generations of Chinese scientists in "saving the country through science" and "building a strong science country". After its resumption in 1978, the Science Pictorial was sponsored and published by Shanghai Science and Technology Press until now. For the past 90 years, Science Illustrated has vividly and easily disseminated the latest technological knowledge and innovative achievements in a visual and textual manner. Many scholars, professors, and scientists have been influenced and inspired by Science Illustrated during their youth. As stated in the exhibition, "Making friends with Science Pictorial will bring many scientist friends.".

The exhibition follows four development stages: "Saving the Country through Science", "Science for the People", "Pioneers", and "New Journey of Science Popularization". Exciting graphics, texts, archives, manuscripts, and other exhibits are selected, supplemented by multimedia and other interesting interactive devices. The "Jade Rabbit" lunar rover model, "Magpie Bridge" relay satellite model, passive spaceborne hydrogen atomic clock, and "Deep Sea Warrior" manned submersible model showcase China's scientific and technological development achievements and the beauty of technology presented in all aspects.

The cover photo wall of the inaugural issue of Science Pictorial outside the exhibition hall features two high school students as the main characters. The rising sun in the distant mountains, satellites, airships, and airplanes in the vast sky, galloping trains, and long-distance cruise ships all embody the beautiful aspirations of the older generation of scientists for popularizing science and inspiring the people. Entering the exhibition hall, one side of the entire journal cover wall catches the eye. A total of 86 covers from the establishment of Science Pictorial in 1933 to the present day are selected, excluding the 5-year suspension period. From the full color picture of the inaugural issue to the silver frame design with blue background, and now to the full-color picture, the audience can intuitively feel the style transformation of Science Pictorial in the changing times and the glorious journey it has gone through in the past 90 years.

Expert writing is a major feature of Science Pictorial. Since its establishment, a group of renowned experts such as Cai Yuanpei, Zhu Kezhen, Ren Hongjun, Bing Zhi, Weng Wenhao, and Zhang Mengwen have contributed to the magazine. The first part of the exhibition hall excerpts the reflections of famous scholars on science from the Science Pictorial.

Pictures are the soul of Science Pictorial. At the exhibition, you can see the work notes, original illustrations, and characteristic paintings of four excellent art editors, including Lin Qin, Hu Yongguang, Bai Genghe, and Han Hesong. You can feel the differences in styles among different creators and the changes in illustration styles in different periods. The second part of the exhibition also showcases a complete set of drawing tools and original illustrations for technological illustrations in the era of manual drawing. Viewers can choose their favorite illustrations to copy and draw on the workbench, experiencing the fun of hand drawn illustrations. The multimedia screen next to the workbench scrolls through more original illustrations, providing readers with updates and changes in technological illustration elements.

Visitors can imitate illustrations on site

The column "Modern Science and Technology Illustrated" was developed by Science Pictorial in 1983 as a distinctive feature. It responds to the letter needs of readers and selectively publishes a modern production process with illustrations that readers are interested in, from insulated cups, enamel vessels, matches, cool oil, to mooncakes, cold drinks, beer, mechanized chicken farming, fish processing, etc., showcasing the production process of objects closely related to readers' lives with illustrations and text. For example, in the 7th issue of 1983, the cold drink production line was introduced, and the exhibition site used this as a material to replicate the ice cream cold drink production and lollipop and ice cream production lines in the cold drink workshop of Shanghai Yimin Food Factory. On the touch screen, you can browse the modern production process of more objects, such as double-sided blades, zippers, cassette tapes, soy products, and other production lines.

The exhibition is guided by the Publicity Department of the Municipal Party Committee, the Municipal Science and Technology Commission, the Municipal Science and Technology Association, Century Publishing Group and other units, hosted by the China Modern Press and Publication Museum, Shanghai Science and Technology Press, and co organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Astronomical Observatory and the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology of Tongji University, and will last until August 31. After the opening ceremony of the exhibition, a forum on the spirit of scientists and the development of science popularization in the new era was held. Wang Pinxian and Chu Junhao, academicians of the CAS Member, and Hu Jinbo, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Branch, made keynote speeches. During the exhibition, there will also be related science popularization lectures and youth activities.
