The nominated film "The Eighth Suspect" for the main competition unit of the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival Golden Earl Awards will be released nationwide on September 9th. The film is based on the largest money robbery case since the founding of New China, directed by Li Zijun, written by Zhou Wenru, starring Da Peng and Lin Jiadong, and starring Zhang Songwen, Qi Xi, and Sun Yang. It is worth mentioning that Dapeng won the Best Actor award at the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival for his role as "Chen Xinwen" in the film.
On July 25th, the eighth suspect released a teaser for the "Sin Madman" version and a set of character posters. In the trailer, Chen Xinwen's three contrasting lives are used as the framework to showcase his complex and intertwined fate with his opponents, family, and loved ones. Da Peng plays Chen Xinwen, a construction businessman who lives a comfortable life but is not content with the current situation. Together with his cousin Chen Xinnian and a group of lawbreakers, they commit a shocking crime of robbing a bank for 15 million yuan in just two minutes. After their accomplices are arrested, Chen Xinwen and his cousin flee overseas under cover. At the same time, the police, represented by Wang Shouyue and He Lan, launch a relentless pursuit operation against them.

The movie "The Eighth Suspect" is adapted from the 1995 Panyu Robbery, which shocked the whole country. The character prototype is Chen Xunmin, one of the top ten bandits in China. At that time, the large-scale armed robbery and extreme violence involved in this case attracted widespread social attention. The film reproduces the true story of this crime, allowing the audience to understand the unknown details behind the case and the police's 21 year commitment to pursuing the culprit. It also attempts to gain insight into complex human nature in the real crime and stimulate attention and reflection on social issues.
In the movie, Da Peng plays Chen Xinwen, spanning 21 years from a wealthy construction merchant to an ordinary and honest ceramic tile vendor. In order to get closer to the merchant image in the play from a physical perspective, Dapeng quickly gained 20 pounds before starting up. After completing the early filming, he also lost 30 pounds within 42 days, striving to approach the appearance characteristics of the prototype characters.
During the premiere of "The Eighth Suspect" at the Shanghai Film Festival, Da Peng watched the film with the audience in the cinema. After winning the Golden Jubilee trophy at the Shanghai Film Festival, Dapeng stated at a media conference that the film was filmed in 2019 and now is the most suitable time for it to face the audience. Over the past four years, the director has never given up hope of release and has been experimenting with various edited versions. Due to the cross narrative of several eras involved in the film, careful editing is necessary to capture the audience's emotions. "When I was watching the movie, I kept picking on my performance. I asked myself, with my current understanding of this matter, would there be any changes in my performance? But in fact, I had already put in all the effort at that time, and I had put in a lot of effort for the character. As a Northeastern person, speaking Cantonese also achieved changes in my body shape over a long span." Da Peng said.
