On June 17th, which marks the 121st anniversary of the founding of Ta Kung Pao, "The Complete History", led by Wu Tingjun, former dean of the School of Journalism and Information at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and published by Fudan University Press, held a new book launch ceremony and an academic seminar on news history research and teaching at Tianjin Normal University.
The Complete History is one of the most comprehensive and systematic research achievements on the history of the Ta Kung Pao, consisting of three volumes: "Bao Shi", "Nian Biao", and "Bao Ren". The "History Report" volume is written with the spirit of "Dagong" as its internal logic. The history of Ta Kung Pao from 1902 to 1949 can be divided into three periods, namely the Yingji period, the Wangji period, and the Xinji period. The history of newspapers in different periods presents different appearances due to the varying degrees of implementation of the spirit of "Da Gong" by the hosts: Ying Lian's first advocacy of "Da Gong" laid a solid foundation for its subsequent development; The Ta Kung Pao newspaper was handed over to Wang Zhilong, and under the leadership of Hu Zhengzhi, the newspaper entered a modern development track; After changing hands with Wang Jinghang, the spirit of "Da Gong" was lacking, ultimately leading to the closure of the newspaper; The continuation of the new edition will raise the banner of "Dagong" and elevate the development of "Ta Kung Pao" to a new height. The "Chronology" volume is a compilation of major events based on diaries, newspaper materials, biographies, related recollection articles, and research works. It is divided into English Chronology, Wang Chronology, and New Chronology. The "Newspaper Man" volume is a biography of "Ta Kung Pao Man", which includes a total of 56 people and is divided into four levels: "Three Generations of Entrepreneurs", "New Records of Young Marshals", "Elite Collectors and Editors", and "Business Insiders". The three volumes of content complement each other, and the "Report History" volume adheres to the principle of "discussing history from history" and updates many views on the history research of the previous "Ta Kung Pao"; The "Chronology" volume provides detailed historical materials for compiling history; The "Bao Ren" volume serves as a supplement to the "Bao Shi" volume, with more vivid and comprehensive content.
Fang Hanqi, founder of the Chinese Society of Journalism and History, stated that the Ta Kung Pao newspaper is a renowned newspaper in modern Chinese history, playing a positive role in news construction, reform and opening up, and modernization. Wu Tingjun began studying the history of the Ta Kung Pao newspaper in the late 1980s. The over 3 million word "Complete History" is the result of his more than 40 years of dedicated research, refreshing and correcting the analysis and comments of previous research work, and has high academic value.
Chen Changfeng, Honorary President of the Chinese Journalism History Society and Professor at the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University, believes that "The Complete History" is an important achievement in the case history of Chinese journalism. Wu Tingjun, upholding a rigorous academic attitude and self-criticism spirit, completed this masterpiece in his rare years. His academic research provided the academic community with a scientific and realistic value system for studying the history of journalism.
Wang Weidong, editor in chief of Fudan University Press, stated that when studying modern Chinese history, one cannot ignore reading the Ta Kung Pao. As a national key book program and a national publishing fund project during the 14th Five Year Plan period, Wu Tingjun's "The Complete History" is the first masterpiece in China to fully record the 47 year history of the "Ta Kung Pao". Guided by the Marxist materialist view of history, it adheres to the principle of "theory comes from history" and, on the basis of absorbing the history of the "Ta Kung Pao" in the past, pushes the research on the history of the "Ta Kung Pao" to a new peak.
