"During the two days of observing the Mogao Grottoes and Yulin Grottoes, regardless of how high the floors are, how long the steps are, or how narrow the corridors are, the painters always keep walking. The oldest painters, Han Shuo and Zhang Leiping, are even more fearless of hard work. They climb up and down the four layers of passages carved out on the cliffs with young painters, one after another, to observe the caves." Xiao Yongjun, secretary of the creative department of the Shanghai Chinese Academy of Painting, remembers that during the Dunhuang art collection, due to the protection of cultural relics, it is not allowed to take photos or stay for too long inside the grottoes. Therefore, after visiting the grottoes, the painters take advantage of the sunset. Yu Hui painted from life outside the Mogao Grottoes, unwilling to leave for a long time.

This exhibition is also a mid-term report on the annual creative tasks of the art academy. Since its establishment, the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy has attached great importance to organizing artists to go out and sketch activities. This year, three generations of artists from the academy, including the elderly, middle-aged, and young, embarked on the Silk Road with a history of over two thousand years, sketching and creating works while collecting art.

The second part, "Journey of a Thousand Miles," focuses on presenting the achievements of painters who have traveled to various places in recent years to sketch and collect style. Painters may depict the grandeur of the majestic Taihang Mountains or the elegant charm of Jiangnan gardens. Character sketching is also commendable, with modern urban figures and portraits of ethnic minorities. It is worth mentioning that the painter's footprints not only cover the whole country, but also travel to various parts of the world, showcasing the local customs and traditions of Latin America, Africa, and Europe vividly in his works.
