Opening of the 2nd GOAT Special Youth Drama Exhibition, YOUNG Theater celebrates its first anniversary of opening
On September 2nd, YOUNG Theater, located in Yangpu District, Shanghai, celebrated its first anniversary of opening. The second GOAT Special Youth Drama Exhibition, jointly initiated by YOUNG Theater and Beijing International Youth Drama Festival, officially opened. Within a month, 6 cutting-edge theatrical works, 3 theatrical performances, 3 theatrical cross-border forums, and 2 theatrical appreciation and exchange activities will be held to comprehensively create a "theatrical festival" for young theater enthusiasts to share, exchange, and interact with.
The GOAT Special Youth Drama Exhibition was jointly launched by YOUNG Theater and Beijing International Youth Drama Festival in 2022. GOAT stands for "Greatest Of All Time", which means "breaking through boundaries, constructing new and seeking change". The second theater exhibition received 129 entries from 118 young artists. When it comes to selection criteria, the program director of YOUNG Theater, Bao Rongrong, said, "GOAT supports the process, not just a result oriented approach. We hope to give more opportunities for the first time."

This year's "Theatre on the Scene" unit features 6 works from different regions such as Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, London, and St. Petersburg. The Statue of a Woman Doing Housework presents the coexistence of "exploitation" and "happiness" in the form of a documentary theater. Will the Rebirth of Oedipus Detect ENFJ? Takes the MBTI personality test as an entry point to explore why this symbolized, fragmented and labeled Internet trend has become a social necessity for contemporary young people. "Beautiful and Beautiful" is a body drama that starts with exploring "action". The main creators explore and explore the undefined "beauty" as creators, performers, and critics. "The Diary of the Madman" is adapted from Gogol's short story of the same name, using multimedia imagery to play the role of actors' partners and companions, exploring where daily reality and bizarre imagination diverge. "The Great Meal" records the attitudes of people from different eras and backgrounds towards food, reflecting the changes in individual attitudes towards life and spiritual pursuits under the changing times. "Unforgettable Tonight" is a work about the night, in which the creator attempts to enter the city's night life from individual experiences and outline the general outline of modern urban night life.

The "Drama in Reading" unit presents three works in the form of script performances and reading sessions. "Cronus at the Cave" portrays everyone's different pursuits towards money, material life, emotions, and spiritual world. "Underground Fairy" portrays female community relationships, and "I Can't Find My Peach Can Lid" begins a fantasy about weddings. The "Drama Talk" unit invites GOAT curator and director Li Jianjun, associate professor of drama, film and television literature at Nanjing University School of Literature, Wei Jiayi, founder and drama producer of "Haoxi", and young creators to share their creative experiences and collide with sparks of thinking, with the theme of "Facing Classics and Facing the Present".
The newly added "Drama Online" unit combines video clips of past works by two curators, Li Jianjun and Bao Rongrong, with on-site guidance, performances, and audience communication. "Changle Road Love Beauty", produced, written, and starred by Rong Rong, is an oral historical theater woven with elements such as amateur performances, live music, and multimedia images. It takes ordinary person Huang Yueping as a sample to tell her youth memories and life stories. Director Li Jianjun's "Electric Sparks" is a work created in 2020 based on the oral story of an ordinary welding worker, Ma Jiandong. In the play, Ma Jiandong uses potatoes and corn as props to vividly tell his family's legendary story.

Drama Online Unit
September 2nd is also the first anniversary of the opening of YOUNG Theater. The predecessor of YOUNG Theater was Yangpu Grand Theatre, which was operated and managed by Shanghai Grand Theatre after being renovated. Since its opening, two theaters, big and small, have performed over 170 stage performances, of which more than 70% are dramas. They have planned and launched over 110 art activities, bringing in and going out, and receiving over 100000 audiences throughout the year.
