The Sanmao series of comics created by "Father of Sanmao" Zhang Leping have won the love of generations of readers. In 2023, on the occasion of the 88th anniversary of the birth of the character of Sanmao, Children's Publishing House released a new book called "The Complete Collection of Sanmao Comics", which comprehensively presents Zhang Leping's creative process with Sanmao as the protagonist for half a century.
On the afternoon of August 5th, at the flagship store of Duoyun Academy, Zhang Leping's son Zhang Weijun, Chairman of the Shanghai Artists Association Zheng Xinyao, Deputy Director of the Chinese Cultural Celebrity Manuscripts Museum of the Shanghai Library Huang Xiangong, Associate Professor Wang Ning of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts at Shanghai University, Director of the Zhang Leping Memorial Museum in Haiyan Xu Ruiji, Director of the Shanghai Artists Association Comic and Anime Art Committee Sun Shaobo, and Honorary Director of the Shanghai Artists Association Comic and Anime Art Committee Shen Tiancheng gathered together with new and old readers of Sanmao to read the "Complete Collection of Sanmao Comics" consisting of over a thousand comics, marking the opening of the "Sanmao Comic Boutique Exhibition".
Feng Jie, President of Children's Publishing House, introduced that as Mr. Zhang Leping's former unit, Children's Publishing House has been an important publishing institution for Zhang Leping's comics since 1959, with the largest variety, scale, duration, and far-reaching influence of publications. In order to keep the classics shining in the present and continue to tell the story of Sanmao well, with the support and assistance of Zhang Leping's family, we have reorganized and arranged a set of nine Sanmao Comics, including "Sanmao in the alley", "Sanmao's Military Chronicles", "Sanmao's Outsiders", "Sanmao's Wandering Chronicles", "Sanmao's Turning Over", "Sanmao's Past and Present", "Sanmao Welcoming Liberation", "Sanmao's Diary", and "Sanmao's New Stories", supplementing many comic works that did not appear in previous episodes.
The Complete Works of Sanmao Comics presents the Sanmao comic series created by Zhang Leping at different times from 1935 to 1992, allowing readers to experience the ups and downs, adventurous life trajectory, and social changes in Sanmao. In the early days, Sanmao was a mischievous and comical child in the alley; During the national crisis, he joined the army to resist Japan for his country; Before the establishment of the People's Republic of China, he was lonely and wandering on the streets, hoping for a bright future; When encountering underground party organizations, he bravely assumes responsibility, cleverly fights against enemies, and welcomes liberation; He lurked to capture enemy agents and turned around to gain new life; Under the sunshine of New China, he became a good child in the new society with excellent character, continuous learning and progress.
"I think the reason why Sanmao has been loved by several generations of readers is because of his optimistic and upward spirit," said Zhang Weijun.

Huang Xiangong, who discovered the first Sanmao comic in 1935, believed that the Complete Collection of Sanmao Comics not only represents the highest artistic achievement of comics, but also a comprehensive compilation of historical documents, with profound significance for future research on Shanghai and Chinese comics. "Sanmao Comics are vivid annotations of Shanghai style culture and Jiangnan culture. Zhang Leping records the changes of important historical periods in Chinese society in the form of wordless comics. His contributions are not limited to comic art, but also like a historian, using images to prove history, allowing readers to enter the historical scene and witness the urban life and social changes in Shanghai."
Wang Ning led a team of graduate students from the Academy of Fine Arts to participate in the coloring process of Sanmao Comics, making contributions to the new appearance of Sanmao Comics Exhibition. Xu Ruiji talked about the feeling of reading the Sanmao series of comics: no matter what situation one is in life, flipping through Sanmao comics can provide a tearful reading experience.
