How to be a "non anxious parent" and face parenting problems that are not big or small, in the first 1000 days of life, parents | beginners | life
The first 1000 days of life - from the mother's pregnancy to the baby's 2-year-old stage - can be said to be a crucial period in determining a person's lifelong health, and at the same time, it is also the most anxious stage for novice parents.
On June 17th, the first release of the new book "Baby Care Handbook" titled "Good Pregnancy and Childbearing for 1000 Days" was held at the East Hall of Shanghai Library. The new book authors Xu Haijun and Ma Simin, along with event guests Wang Jian, the director of the Jing'an Maternal and Child Health Center, and Zhang Lei, the director of the Health Education Department of the Jing'an Maternal and Child Health Center, talked about maternal and child health and scientific child rearing, presenting a parenting class full of work and laughter.
The Baby Care Handbook: The First Lesson for Novice Parents is a mother and baby health knowledge book that directly addresses the 108 most frequently asked questions by novice parents, making it a comprehensive guide from pregnancy and childbirth to parenting. The first half of the section, from the perspective of professional obstetricians and gynecologists, aims to popularize health knowledge and disease points during pregnancy and childbirth, help novice parents alleviate pregnancy and childbirth anxiety, reduce unnecessary medical treatment, and accompany them through pregnancy and childbirth smoothly. The latter part, from the perspective of a professional pediatrician, aims to popularize parenting knowledge in infancy and young children, helping novice parents scientifically cope with the processes that their babies will go through after birth, and mastering the knowledge of possible diseases. It is hoped that novice parents can grasp this book and scientifically raise children without anxiety.
Xu Haijun and Ma Simin are both co authors of this book and golden partners in the maternal and infant world who have worked together for many years. Since 2018, the two have been operating the "Dr. Libra Mama" platform, relying on the Shanghai innovative medical service brand "Jing'an District Good Pregnancy and Good Childhood 1000 Day Project", in an attempt to provide assistance to novice parents who are confused or have nowhere to inquire during pregnancy or childcare.
When talking about the original intention of doing science popularization for mothers and babies, Xu Haijun sighed: "Doctor Ma and I are roommates in the university. I am an obstetrician and gynaecologist. She is a paediatrician and also a mother of two children. At the same time, she has the dual identity of doctor and mother, so she is very able to sympathize with parents who are worried, nervous and anxious in the process of pregnancy. Almost all of us have or are experiencing their concerns. So, one year after I took charge of the health education course for pregnant mothers, I found Doctor Ma and told him my idea of creating a official account. In terms of content, we can translate the unskillful medical knowledge into popular science articles that ordinary people can understand. Combined with our own experience sharing, even some failure experiences, the detours we have gone through have also been presented together. We hit it off immediately, and started to work at once. It has been six years now."
The Baby Care Handbook is a practical parenting manual extracted from long-term clinical diagnosis and treatment experience and popular science experience. When it comes to why you want to write this book, Ma Simin candidly said, "There are many maternal and child reading materials on the market at present, often with more scientific content and less affinity. What we want to do is a practical self-help manual that covers as many problems and confusions that novice parents often encounter, but not too big or small, as possible, so that they can have more direction and confidence in parenting."

Looking through the table of contents, this book is not entirely about medical topics, but covers all aspects of life from pregnancy to early childcare: can expectant mothers dye or perm their hair? Can I drink tea/coffee during pregnancy/lactation? What to do with leg cramps during pregnancy? How to correct a baby's head deviation? "These seemingly trivial issues may be major challenges faced by a new family at a certain stage, and these minor issues often become the focus of family conflicts. It is hoped that this book will guide scientific parenting while reducing family conflicts, and provide a harmonious parenting atmosphere for children," Xu Haijun added.
At the event, the four guests not only shared their creative journey, but also set up interactive sessions to answer the questions raised by the on-site readers one by one. Ma Simin said, "With the encouragement and support of so many readers, we feel a sense of achievement as doctors, a sense of honor as authors, and a sense of mission as science popularization enthusiasts. In the future, we will continue to do our best to educate novice parents about professional knowledge and common sense in parenting. Sometimes it is companionship, sometimes it is comfort, and more importantly, it is growing together."
The event is hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press, Jing'an District Maternal and Child Health Care Institute, and Shanghai Library, and co organized by the Jing'an Branch of the Shanghai European and American Alumni Association.
