In August, there will be two exhibitions in one museum, the "Poverty Alleviation Story Painting: Series of Serial Art Exhibition" Shanghai Station Tour, and the "Reader Magazine Illustrated Art Exhibition" Shanghai Station Tour. Starting from August 1st, they will be simultaneously open to the public at the Baoshan International Folk Art Expo in Shanghai.
The "Poverty Alleviation Story Painting: Series of Serial Art Exhibitions" is hosted by the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, the National Museum of China, and the Literary and Art Department of the People's Daily. The Shanghai Station Tour is the seventh stop after the first exhibition in Shenyang. In 2020, on the occasion of the decisive victory in poverty alleviation, the Literary and Art Department of the People's Daily collaborated with the China Artists Association to plan and launch the "Poverty Alleviation Story Painting" comic book column in the Art Edition of the People's Daily Literary Supplement. 30 comic artists from the old, middle, and young generations were invited to collectively create, including the older generation comic artists Hu Bozong, Hou Guoliang, Shen Yaoyi, Feng Yuan, oil painting master Luo Genxing, printmaking master Dai Daquan, as well as post-80s painters Shen Lu and Cao Yannan.
The exhibition consists of six chapters: Model Chapter, Self Strengthening Chapter, Contribution Chapter, Dedication Chapter, Innovation Chapter, and Hearts Chapter. 35 sets of 209 comic works showcase the most representative characters and stories that emerged during the poverty alleviation campaign. Some of these works depict the hard work and practical deeds of poverty alleviation cadres in "true poverty alleviation, poverty alleviation, and poverty alleviation", some depict the struggle stories of poverty-stricken households who have been registered and registered for poverty alleviation, and some depict the selfless acts of poverty alleviation by people from all walks of life. The 10 role models who were awarded the honorary title of "National Model for Poverty Alleviation" at the National Poverty Alleviation Summary and Commendation Conference were all presented under the brush of a comic artist: Liu Hu, who had worked hard to get sick and was paralyzed in bed for 470000 people drinking "safe water"; Huang Wenxiu, who returned to his hometown to dedicate himself and compose the song of youth in the new era; Li Yu, the leader of the "small fungus industry"; Zhang Xiaojuan, the "good daughter of Tibet" who died in the line of duty; Zhang Guimei, who is suffering from a terminal illness and still stands firm on the podium; Xia Sen, who donated his life savings to support rural education... Through more than 200 comic works with both historical and artistic value, visitors can have a more three-dimensional understanding of the great spirit of poverty alleviation. This exhibition is also a new attempt for the comic industry to once again approach the public with new content, new style, and new form.
Reader is a well-known journal for readers. The "Inheriting Cultural Aesthetics and Building a Bookish Society - Illustrated Art Exhibition of Reader Magazine", also a promotion project of the National Art Fund, has selected over 120 illustrations from over 20000 created by over 300 artists for Reader. The authors of these illustrations include renowned artists who have long been engaged in illustration creation, as well as painting enthusiasts who have extensive exposure to other art forms. The types and styles of illustrations are diverse.
To help visitors better understand the creative background of the illustrations, some illustrations are combined with the original magazine's text content. Scanning the QR code on the illustrator's exhibition label can also help them understand the story of the illustrator and the Reader. The exhibition is guided by the Propaganda Department of the Gansu Provincial Party Committee and the Gansu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, organized by Reader's Publishing Group Co., Ltd. and Reader's Publishing Media Co., Ltd., organized by Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Art Exhibition Hall and Reader's Magazine Society, with academic guidance provided by the Beijing Academy of Painting and exhibition support provided by the Reader's Illustration Art Museum. Both themed exhibitions will continue to be exhibited until August 20th.
