Jiefang Daily's Shangguan News reporter learned from the Shanghai Pingtan Troupe that Yu Hongxian, a Pingtan performer and representative inheritor of the national intangible cultural heritage project Suzhou Pingtan, passed away at 6:18 am on August 19th at Huashan Hospital at the age of 84. "Butterfly Loves Flower - Answering Li Shuyi" was first sung by Yu Hongxian and spread throughout the country. In 2014, Yu Hongxian won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 8th China Quyi Peony Awards.
Yu Hongxian, born in 1939, often accompanied her parents to the Tianchan Stage to watch performances by Zhou Xinfang, Gai Mingtian, and others when she was a child. She also listened to programs such as Yue Opera, Shanghai Opera, and comical plays on the radio. She has a neighbor who is the sister of Shanghai opera master Shi Xiaoying. Yu Hongxian really wants to learn Shanghai opera from Shi Xiaoying, and Shi Xiaoying has also taken a liking to her. But due to financial difficulties in her family, her father suggested that she learn Pingtan, as storytelling doesn't require much luggage.
In 1952, Yu Hongxian became a disciple of the veteran Pingtan artist Zui Nishang. At that time, when the teacher tried her voice, Yu Hongxian sang "Zhi Chao Du Xin" from the Shanghai opera "Bi Luo Huang Quan". She sings Shanghai opera with a bright voice, but can Pingtan sing well? The teacher first enlightened her with Jiang Diao's "Battle of Changsha". Yu Hongxian studied diligently and sang beautifully, and it was only then that the teacher officially accepted her. Drunken Nishang, who is over fifty years old, is skilled in rap and playing the lyrics "Twin Pearl Phoenix". Diligent and eager to learn, Yu Hongxian soon teamed up with her teacher and senior sister to sing "Twin Pearl Phoenix". She also teamed up with Wang Zaixiang, received his assistance, improved her calligraphy skills, and wrote long poems such as "Hairpin Phoenix", "Horse Trading Strategy", and "Yang Naiwu and Little Cabbage". At the end of 1960, Yu Hongxian joined the Shanghai People's Pingtan Troupe and collaborated with Chen Xi'an, Xu Lixian, Jiang Yuequan, Yang Zhenyan, and others to perform songs such as "The Daughter of the Party", "Twin Pearl Phoenix", "Seize the Seal", and "Describing the Golden Phoenix".

In the process of Pingtan's nationwide expansion, the form of "poetry score singing" played an important driving role. Mao Zedong's poem "Butterfly Loves Flower: Answering Li Shuyi", composed by Pingtan performer Zhao Kaisheng and sung by Yu Hongxian, is one of the most classic representatives. In November 2007, Yu Hongxian's 55th anniversary performance was held at the Lanxin Grand Theater in Shanghai. The Liberation Daily published "Yu Hongxian: An Unbreakable Golden Voice", detailing the birth process of "Butterfly Loves Flower - Answering Li Shuyi".
In 1958, Yu Hongxian first performed Butterfly in Love with Flowers, Answering Li Shuyi in Xizang Bookstore. After singing, the audience was silent. After six or seven seconds, the audience applauded. Zhao Kaisheng and Yu Hongxian finally felt relieved. "Butterfly Loves Flower: Answering Li Shuyi" combines the melodies of various genres such as Jiang, Li, Yu, and Xue, and is very innovative. After the summer training in 1960, with the help of senior artists such as Zhou Yunrui, Xu Lixian, and Zhang Jianguo, they modified and processed "Butterfly Loves Flower: Answering Li Shuyi" to make their singing more passionate.
In 1960, Yu Hongxian went to the Jinjiang Small Auditorium to sing "Butterfly Loves Flower - Answering Li Shuyi". Chen Yun was very impressed upon hearing it, and Liu Shaoqi also shook hands with her warmly after the performance. Premier Zhou even listened to her singing "Butterfly Loves Flower - Answering Li Shuyi" several times and praised her for her good score and singing. On January 22, 1961, with the careful arrangement of musicians Huang Yijun, Situ Han, and others, "Butterfly Loves Flower · Answer to Li Shuyi" was brought to the symphonic choir stage. With the accompaniment of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and hundreds of people from the Shanghai Choir, Yu Hongxian sang it alone. "Butterfly Loves Flower · Answer to Li Shuyi" thus gained nationwide fame.

Zhao Kaisheng once recalled that Li Shuyi also found him and told him that he had seen the Pingtan album "Butterfly Love Flower · Answer to Li Shuyi" more than once in Chairman Mao's study. The art of Pingtan has also gained a wider audience through the dissemination of this work.
In December 1960, Yu Hongxian joined the Shanghai People's Pingtan Troupe, which became an important turning point in her artistic development path. Famous members of the People's Pingtan Troupe gathered, and Yu Hongxian was like a fish in water. First, she collaborated with Chen Xi'an on "The Daughter of the Party", then with Xu Lixian on "Twin Beads of Phoenix", and then with Jiang Yuequan on the modern full-length "Seize the Seal". She also participated in multiple mid length Pingtan performances such as "Strong People and Strong Horses", "Red Plum Zan", "Qingwen", and "Dian Qiuxiang". Under the guidance of renowned artists, her singing art has become increasingly mature.
Yu Hongxian's playing and singing combines the grace and mellow style of Jiang diao with the gentle and graceful beauty of Li diao, with the joyful jumping of Qin diao and the ups and downs of Yu diao, forming his unique artistic style of combining hardness and softness, and being passionate and unrestrained. Chen Yun listened to her performances multiple times and earnestly instructed that Pingtan should support new works and adhere to the right path of publishing books, which gave Yu Hongxian profound education and great encouragement.
