Jiefang Daily's Shangguan News reporter learned from the Shanghai Huai Opera Troupe that He Shuanglin, a Huai Opera performing artist, representative inheritor of national intangible cultural heritage projects, and a national first-class actor of the Shanghai Huai Opera Troupe, passed away at 4:53 am on August 18th at Shanghai Yuanda Heart and Chest Hospital due to ineffective medical treatment. He was 78 years old. The memorial service is scheduled to be held on August 20th at the Longhua Funeral Parlor in Shanghai.
He Shuanglin, originally from Jianhu, Jiangsu, was born in June 1945 in Shanghai. In 1957, he joined the Huai Opera Troupe School in Shanghai and studied under his father He Zhaotian. In 1959, he officially joined the Communist Youth League and devoted himself to studying the art of He Pai. He often performed in famous plays of He Pai, such as "Three Women Fighting for the Board", "Yuan Men Zhanzi", and "Qin Xianglian". He also played Jin Long in the newly edited Huai opera "Jin Long and Mayfly", Li Haizhou in "Picking Coal Cinder", and Jiao Yulu in "Jiao Yulu". He has won honors such as the National Excellent Performance Award for Local Opera Exchange and the Shanghai Magnolia Drama Performance Art Leading Actor Award. In 1980, He Shuanglin enrolled in the Drama Director Class of Shanghai Theatre Academy to study. After graduation, he directed new plays such as Huai Opera "Mother and Son" and "Bloody Central Plains". He also directed multiple dramas, including the Yue opera "One Night Bride", "Legendary Wanderer", "Detective", "Wang Tiger's Marriage", the Shanghai opera "Hu Jinchu Borrows Wife", the multimedia opera "Jade Flying Phoenix", the Beijing opera "Zhuge Liang's Marriage Recruitment", and the Xixi opera "Qingfeng Pavilion". After retirement, He Shuanglin devoted his entire life to the younger generation of actors, making important contributions to the inheritance and development of Huai Opera art.
On July 15th this year, He Shuanglin recruited Zhang Hua and Wang Xiwen and held a simple and grand apprenticeship ceremony in the ward of Huashan Hospital. At the apprenticeship ceremony, He Shuanglin earnestly reminded the two disciples, "I hope you will continue along this path. Inherit the art of He School and Huai Opera. Teach more students and fulfill the responsibilities of Huai Opera people."
As a national level inheritor of intangible cultural heritage, He Shuanglin has always upheld a positive and serious attitude in the inheritance and promotion of Huai Opera. He not only constantly challenges himself in the performance of plays, but also tirelessly guides generations of students in the inheritance of He School art, allowing them to shine in the art of Huai Opera. For the past 7 years, despite his illness, He Shuanglin has been active on the front line of teaching, wholeheartedly spreading the art of Huai Opera. Since the beginning of this year, He Shuanglin has been receiving intermittent treatment in the hospital. While in bed, he still does not forget to teach his younger generation and cares about the development of the Huai Opera industry.
Zhang Hua is an outstanding actor introduced by the Shanghai Huai Opera Troupe as a talent in 1996. As one of the outstanding inheritors of the He School of Huai Opera and a municipal intangible cultural heritage inheritor, Zhang Hua has been studying and inheriting He School of Art with He Shuanglin. Since joining the troupe in the 1980s, Wang Xiwen has been studying drama with He Shuanglin. The apprenticeship ceremony held in the ward, although simple, made everyone deeply feel the dedication and genuine love of the senior artists for Huai Opera.
In recent years, He Shuanglin has guided the younger generation of actors from the Huai Opera Troupe to rehearse classic plays such as "The Legend of the White Snake", "The Three Women Fighting for the Board", and "Wang Baochuan". He likes to jot down a page full of small problems discovered during rehearsals, without missing a single one. During the rehearsal of "The Legend of the White Snake", He Shuanglin reminded Xu Xian to play Wang Junjie, "You are playing the kind and loyal Xu Xian, and the girl you like is asking you, 'Where is your hometown?' You have to answer the question, not a beautiful young person taking photos." He glanced at his notes and then told Gu Xinyu, who played Bai Suzhen, "When standing, don't always face the audience. Your body should be slightly sideways for better viewing. Your play is very heavy, go over it when you sleep." He encouraged young actors, "Don't just think about good listening and beauty, you need to capture the audience's emotions and play out the Huai Opera flavor. This performance will show the audience the Huai Opera flavor." The new generation of actors in the troupe are not inferior to those in the same age group in terms of literary and martial arts, rather than those who know a little bit about literary and martial arts

On January 29th of this year, He Shuanglin gave the first post holiday lesson to young actors at the Shanghai Opera House, guiding them step by step from their sleeves to their body shape. "It's not their turn to sing on their own, so we still need to do the play well and maintain the character's state." "Don't turn your back to the audience." "With their eyes and detailed movements, let the audience see you." On February 3rd, this group of young actors starred in "Hu Jinchu Borrowing Wife" appeared on the Tianchan Yifu stage.
