The exhibition "Gu Liming's Language Transformation - From Mawangdui to Shanshui Fu" opened on August 4th at the Jiushi Art Space on the Bund at No. 18. The exhibition selected 76 representative works of Gu Liming's artistic creation in the past 40 years, divided into four parts: "Mawangdui", "Gate God", "Buddha Statue", and "Shanshui Fu", covering various forms of expression such as oil painting, watercolor, printmaking, pottery, comprehensive materials and installations, presenting the artist's artistic exploration path and reflection on traditional Chinese culture and contemporary spirit.

Gu Liming was born in Weifang, Shandong in 1963. He previously taught at the China Academy of Fine Arts and is currently a professor at the School of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University. Exploring the contemporary transformation of traditional culture has become the mainstream value orientation and creative methodology of contemporary Chinese art. Gu Liming is one of the earliest explorers, who has long been dedicated to the contemporary transformation of folk New Year paintings, Dunhuang murals, and traditional landscape art patterns, constructing abstract expressive painting forms with distinct personal styles. The series of works that appear in this exhibition are their continuation and interpretation of history through visual language.

In the "Door God" series, Gu Liming borrowed the image of door gods from New Year paintings to imbue oil paintings with Chinese charm. In the "Shan Shui Fu" series, he uses the landscape painting theory of Jing Hao from the Five Dynasties period to express the relationship between tradition and modernity, as well as between humans and nature. During the creation of this series, Gu Liming also began to try to incorporate the art of tearing paper into the collage of images.
This exhibition is hosted by Shanghai Jiushi Art Museum and co organized by Unused Space. Zhang Xiaoling serves as the curator, and Tong Yanrunan serves as the artistic director; Aiming to combine traditional culture with contemporary art through rich and diverse forms of expression and unique artistic thinking, and stimulate the audience's philosophical thinking on art.
The exhibition will be open to the public for free from August 4th and will continue until October 16th.
