The "Creating Environment through Heart - Research Exhibition on Ming and Qing Dynasty Figure Paintings in the Collection of Shanghai Chinese Academy of Painting" hosted by Shanghai Chinese Academy of Painting was held on July 13th in Hall 3 of Cheng Shifa Art Museum. This exhibition selects more than 40 treasures from the hospital's collection, showcasing works by famous artists such as Chen Hongshou, Ding Yunpeng, Zeng Jing, Huang Shen, Gao Qipei, Luo Pin, Ren Bonian, etc. It involves portraits of different themes such as portraits, high-ranking scholars, and ladies. Some of the collections are rare, and there are also masterpieces exhibited for the first time. The exhibition not only activates the exquisite collection, but also presents the charm of traditional culture to the audience.

In his painting theory, Guo Ruoxu of the Song Dynasty said, "Buddhism, Taoism, figures, maids, cows and horses are not as ancient as before." Although Chinese figure painting was "not as ancient" during the period of literati painting, the development of figure painting in the Ming and Qing dynasties saw a new turn and meaningful breakthroughs as it gradually declined, giving rise to a group of distinctive and innovative figure painters and schools. The "Shadow like Portrait" of Zeng Jing, the ink filled Xu Wei, the light and elegant Wen Zhengming, the quaint and awe inspiring Chen Hongshou, the unique representative of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, and the "Three Ren" of the Sea Painting School, which combines elegance and popular culture, will travel through time and space, leading the audience to appreciate the artistic charm of Ming and Qing character paintings and appreciate their different voices.

The exhibition is divided into three sections: the diverse world, the new from the past, and the auspicious colors of the Tao. Works such as "Chen Yupu Statue", "Yi Xuan Tu", and "Qing Dynasty Character Sketches" in the "Diverse World" section depict real character images from different perspectives, showcasing their living conditions and worldly emotions. In "The Statue of Chen Yupu", the characters sit on a lake stone, dressed elegantly, with a smile on their chin and eyes, calm and contented, which is also a reflection of the ideal state of literati. The works such as "Dongshan Silk and Bamboo", "Zanhua Dragging the Staff", "Dai Fu Joining the Army", and "Embracing the Sword and Fairy" in the "New from the Past" section showcase the value ideals of painters pursuing their ancestors and traditional literati painting. Qi Baishi's "Swordsmanship Lady" has rarely been published. In the painting, the woman holds a sword with her arms wrapped around her, her eyebrows and eyes conveying emotions, exuding a sense of heroism. In the "Dao Shi Rui Cai" section, immortal figures such as Zhong Kui and Tie Guai Li express secular sentiments and transcendent inner expressions through their free and unrestrained, bold and powerful brushstrokes.
