On July 29, the Dunhuang Culture Theme Forum "Inheriting Dunhuang Culture and Continuing the Splendor of the Silk Road" was held in the Shanghai center Building, the highest building in China, and Su Bomin, the president of the Dunhuang Research Institute The topic was the protection process and spirit of the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang, and experts from Dunhuang Research Institute and student representatives exchanged and talked.

Dunhuang's cultural and historical heritage is rich and profound, with broad and profound cultural connotations. It is a microcosm of the inclusiveness of Chinese culture and an open and inclusive attitude towards world civilization, as well as a vivid display of the confidence of the Chinese nation's culture. At the forum, Su Bomin shared the "History of the Protection of Mogao Grottoes - Witness the Spirit of Mogao". He reviewed the history of the protection of the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang with his own experience over the years, showing the demeanor of generations of Dunhuang people.

During the period of the Dunhuang Art Research Institute from 1944 to 1949, the first director and famous painters, Chang Shuhong, along with senior artists such as Duan Wenjie, Huo Xiliang, Sun Rujian, Ouyang Lin, and Shi Weixiang, left the big city and came to Dunhuang, the northwest frontier where the wind and sand howled, the desolate and lonely, transportation was inconvenient, and life was difficult. They overcame the difficulties of having no houses, no electricity, no running water, limited funds, a lack of manpower, and a lack of protection technicians and technical means. They cleared the accumulated sand in more than 300 caves, dismantled the earthen kang and stove built by the Russians inside the caves, carried out preliminary repairs to the caves, raised funds to install cave doors for some key caves, built walls around the Mogao Caves, and initially blocked wind and sand erosion and human damage. They also began to copy cave murals, investigate cave numbering and content, and hold exhibitions.

In the late 1980s, the Dunhuang Research Institute collaborated with domestic and foreign scientific research institutions to first establish a 6000 meter long vertical sand barrier at the top of the Mogao Caves. Then, more than 1 million square meters of grass squares were laid on the surface of the sand mountain in the southwest direction of the cliff top. In front of the grass squares, 100000 square meters of sand fixing plants were planted, and more than 1.6 million square meters of gravel paving and pressing belts were laid in the middle of the sand fixing belt and the cliff top area. According to monitoring, the implementation of this project has reduced the wind and sand in Mogao Grottoes by about 85%, greatly slowing down the erosion of Dunhuang murals and sculptures caused by wind and sand.

The rumor of Dunhuang camels being fatigued to death during this summer vacation reflects the pressure faced by the booming tourism industry in Dunhuang. Su Bomin stated that in the face of a large customer flow, the Dunhuang Research Institute has collaborated with Huawei, Tencent, and others to develop more digital exhibition projects, which not only provide viewers with a complete and novel travel experience, but also continuously protect cultural relics, reducing the harm caused by human factors to the Mogao Grottoes murals.

How to be a guardian, protector, and disseminator of Dunhuang culture in the new era is an important proposition. Li Ping, Minister of the Cultural Promotion Department of the Dunhuang Research Institute, shared the theme of "Promoting Dunhuang Grottoes" at the forum, proposing new ideas on the promotion and protection of Dunhuang Grottoes from the perspective of Dunhuang cultural inheritance.

In the roundtable segment of the forum, guests such as Li Ping and cross-border artist Mi Qiu also answered questions with student representatives on how to better understand the millennium accumulation and thickness of Dunhuang culture, and how to understand the importance of Dunhuang culture in Chinese history, inspiring the younger generation to love and pay attention to Dunhuang culture.

At the forum, the Shanghai center signed a three-year strategic cooperation agreement with the Dunhuang Research Institute, focusing on cooperation in cultural and tourism industry integration, cultural research activities, cultural and creative product development and other aspects. This is the second collaboration between the Shanghai center and the Dunhuang Research Institute. As early as 2018, the Shanghai center, together with the Dunhuang Research Institute and other partners, held a Dunhuang exhibition, copying the famous caves such as Cave 285 of the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang in equal proportion, displaying precious documents from the Sutra Cave, and providing visitors with immersive viewing experience with naked 3D and other technologies. After the forum, "Mogao Academy" held a special experience class in Shanghai center. In the future, both sides will launch more projects to promote the inheritance and development of Dunhuang culture in the new era.
